MG's attack on Australia's small electric car segment continues apace, with full specifications for the updated version of the Chinese brand's long-standing MG 4 revealing major price cuts and slight equipment tweaks.

Now dubbed MG 4 EV, the electric hatch range has been simplified and now comprises just two variants: the single-motor rear-wheel drive MG 4 Essence 64 priced at $39,990 drive-away, and the dual-motor all-wheel drive MG 4 XPower at $47,990 drive-away.

They're both significantly cheaper than their pre-update equivalents, which previously cost $44,990 and $55,990 before on-roads, respectively. When drive-away pricing is considered, the new Essence 64 is also cheaper than the now-defunct base Excite 51, which was priced at $37,990 before on-roads.

The updated MG 4 EV range is still pricier than the newer front-drive MG 4 EV Urban, which starts at $31,990 drive-away. However, that car's smaller battery options mean it's better suited to urban commuting than the non-Urban MG 4 EV.

Confusing naming conventions aside, you'll be hard-pressed to spot the external differences with the latest MG 4. The only visual changes are a new rear spoiler and three new paint finishes, with most tweaks reserved for its interior and drivetrain.

Inside, the MG 4 EV now features larger screens: a new 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen (up from 10.25-inch), and a new 10.25-inch digital instrument display (up from 7.0-inch).

The former runs on a new operating system and finally supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the latter is better integrated than the free-standing unit it replaces.

A row of physical switchgear including buttons and knobs has been added below the touchscreen, while the prominent ‘shelf’ that housed the rotary gear selector has been removed.

The dial has instead been moved to the centre console near a wireless phone charging pad, and a pair of cupholders sit at the base of the centre stack.

Drivetrain-wise, both variants now come with a 64kWh battery, though the Essence 64 has a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit and the XPower continues with a carryover nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery. The 51kWh and 77kWh batteries are no longer available.

Driving range in the Essence 64 is up from 435km to 452km, while the XPower is practically unchanged at 405km.

The Essence 64 remains rear-wheel drive, while the XPower is still all-wheel drive – and boasts a claimed 0-100km/h time of just 3.8 seconds.
