2027 Chery Stockman ute delayed, pre-launch offers announced

Lowest prices might be just the beginning at Bunnings, but Chery is keeping its powder dry with Stockman pricing even as it announces free gift cards and servicing.

Reservations are now open for the 2027 Chery Stockman, with the Chinese brand dangling some tempting incentives for buyers of the ground-breaking diesel plug-in hybrid (PHEV) dual-cab ute, even as it keeps pricing under wraps – and as first customer deliveries slip into the new year.

From today (October 1) until official sales commence, customers who place a refundable $1000 deposit online for the Stockman are eligible for an "exclusive pre-launch incentive package".

This includes a $2000 Bunnings gift card and three years or 45,000km of complimentary scheduled servicing.

Chery had previously announced an Australian launch for the Stockman during the fourth quarter (October to December) of 2026, but it's now saying customer deliveries are due from February 1, 2027.

Pricing and detailed specifications will be announced closer to the ute's launch.

“Opening reservations for the Stockman marks an important milestone for Chery in Australia,” said Chery Australia chief operating officer Lucas Harris in a press release.

“We’ve had a phenomenal response to the Stockman since the first announcement, and the reservation program gives customers the opportunity to secure their place ahead of the official sales launch, while also receiving a valuable pre-launch offer.

“The Stockman represents another significant step in the expansion of the Chery brand in Australia, and we look forward to sharing more details with customers as we move closer to its official launch.”

Back in July, Chery said it had received more than 5000 expressions of interest and taken more than 1000 deposits.

The Stockman will be Australia's first diesel PHEV ute, though a petrol PHEV powertrain is due to become available in the second half of 2027, to more directly take on the likes of the BYD Shark 6.

Chery has enlisted Australian engineering firm Premcar, which developed local chassis tunes for the rival Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton, to put the Stockman through a local testing and validation program.

The Stockman will be launched with a 350kW/800Nm 2.5-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder PHEV powertrain, offering up to 100km of electric range under the more lenient NEDC standard and combined cycle fuel consumption of 2.0L/100km.

Braked towing capacity is 3500kg, and the Stockman diesel PHEV features double-wishbone front suspension and leaf springs at the rear, with locking front, centre and rear differentials and standard all-terrain tyres wrapped around 17-inch alloy wheels.

The petrol PHEV will use a turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, and offer 395kW and 1000Nm. It'll differ in suspension setup, using coil springs at the rear.

The Stockman may not be the only diesel PHEV ute here for long, with GWM confirming it's working on the technology ahead of a 2027 launch in China.

Chery will offer the Stockman with various luxury features still rare in the segment, albeit ones found in the likes of the GWM Cannon Alpha, including ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof.

The brand's configurator lists only a black interior and a choice of four exterior finishes: Sandstone, Obsidian, Serpentine and White Opal.

The ute was originally shown in late 2025 at the Chengdu motor show as a model under Chery's Rely brand, alongside a slightly smaller electric ute known as the KP2X.

At the same time, Rely confirmed it was working on a larger KP4X ute – which could target full-size US pickups like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota Tundra, and Ram 1500. GWM has also confirmed it was working on a Ram 1500-sized pickup, though development was paused.

The Stockman was subsequently previewed to Australian media under the KP31 placeholder nameplate earlier this year, before Chery announced a competition for Australians to name the new model. The winning moniker was Stockman, beating out other nameplates like Outrider and Orca.

While it's the Chery group's first ute in Australia, another one is planned from the incoming Jetour brand. The F700 ute could arrive here as soon as late 2027.
