The Mazda MX-5 has been upgraded with more sophisticated safety technology, with flagship GT RS variants also getting a sportier cabin.

The updated MX-5, which Mazda calls a 2026 model despite the year being almost over, is now available to order. Customer deliveries will commence this month.

Prices have been increased across the board by $1950, apart from GT RS variants which have received an even larger hike of $4950.

However, Mazda Australia has added various features. All MX-5s now feature lane-keep assist in addition to the existing lane-departure warning, while the autonomous emergency braking system now detects cyclists in addition to vehicles and pedestrians.

GT RS variants gain standard Recaro bucket seats upholstered in Nappa leather and Alcantara, with light grey stitching. Alcantara trim now also swathes the dashboard, centre console, console lid, and door cards.

Recaro seats haven't been offered in an Australian-market MX-5 since the 2019 30th Anniversary Edition, of which just 30 examples came to Australia. However, they have been offered since then in overseas-market MX-5s.

Finally, Zinc Green Metallic has joined the exterior colour palette, giving the MX-5 its first green paint job in Australia in 10 years. Mazda says the paint was inspired not by some beautiful landscape or animal, but rather by the colour and texture of zinc chromate primer.

This industrial-chic finish features a "solid-like texture" and is available for both Roadster and RF body styles, joining an otherwise unchanged colour palette which also comprises:

    • Snowflake White Pearl Mica
    • Soul Red Crystal Metallic
    • Deep Crystal Blue Mica
    • Jet Black Mica
    • Machine Grey Metallic
    • Aero Grey Metallic.

All MX-5s in Australia come with a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 135kW of power and 205Nm of torque, mated with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
