Xpeng has revealed more details of its new G9L large SUV ahead of its imminent arrival in Australia, when it will bring both all-electric (EV) and extended-range electric (EREV) powertrains, up to 1200km of claimed range, and a tech-packed cabin.

The Xpeng G9L will join the Chinese brand’s expanding Australian line up next month, bringing a new rival for large electric SUVs such as the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90.

Measuring 5.12 metres long on a 3100mm wheelbase, the G9L is designed to offer generous passenger space, premium features, and long-distance touring capability.

The big SUV will be offered with both EV and EREV, but Xpeng is yet to confirm full specifications of the models destined for Australia.

However, the company has now detailed its Kunpeng Super Electric range-extender system, which uses a petrol engine to generate electricity rather than mechanically drive the wheels.

The EREV powertrain comprises a 63kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery delivering a claimed 287km of electric range on the WLTP cycle. Combined range is claimed to reach up to 1200km.

Xpeng says the system is based on an 800V electrical architecture and DC fast-charging at up to 5C, allowing the battery to charge from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 12 minutes under suitable conditions.

The range-extender powertrain produces a claimed 430kW of power and 695Nm of torque, enabling a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds.

A dedicated 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine acts solely as a generator, with the electric motor responsible for driving the wheels.

Xpeng says its energy management system can adjust how the battery and generator work together according to driving conditions, while noise-cancellation technology is designed to minimise the difference in sound between range-extender and battery-electric operation.

The G9L will also be available as a pure EV, with further details of the Australian lineup yet to be confirmed.

Inside, the large SUV is designed to deliver premium comfort across all three rows, with a seven-seat layout available.

The front seats feature Nappa leather upholstery, heating, ventilation, 16-point massage, and adaptive side bolsters, while the front passenger gets a zero-gravity seat. The second row adds power adjustment, heating, 10-point massage, and electric sunshades, while the third row features power adjustment and heating.

Other equipment includes a 26-speaker premium audio system, an integrated refrigerator, and multiple passenger entertainment displays.

Under the skin, the G9L features double-wishbone front suspension, an H-arm multi-link rear setup, dual-chamber air suspension, and continuous damping control, while rear-wheel steering is designed to improve manoeuvrability in tight spaces.

The SUV will feature Xpeng’s latest driver-assistance technology, including its Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP) system, powered by the company's Turing AI chips.

Capabilities planned for a future over-the-air software update include assisted driving on urban roads and highways, navigation-based driving assistance, lane changes, traffic-light recognition, and more advanced parking functions.

However, the availability and scope of these features will depend on local regulations and the timing of the software rollout. Xpeng emphasises the system remains a supervised driver-assistance technology, rather than a fully autonomous driving system.

The G9L will also use the company's XOS 6.0 infotainment system, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 processor, with a five-screen interface and over-the-air update capability.

It will be positioned below the six- and seven-seat Xpeng GX large SUV, which is due to arrive in Australia sometime in 2027.

In addition to the G9L and GX SUVs, Xpeng Australia has confirmed the updated G6 mid-size SUV and new X9 people mover will go on sale by the end of this month, followed by the new L03 mid-size SUV in November, and the new L05 mid-size fastback SUV in early 2027.

The automaker is also evaluating the second-generation P7 for Australia, although it has yet to confirm the striking electric liftback for local showrooms.

Australian pricing, final specifications, and the availability of individual powertrain and seating configurations have yet to be announced for the G9L.
