Bigger new second-generation BYD Seal 07 sedan revealed in China

The second-generation BYD Seal 07 has been officially unveiled in China – just six months after the original Seal 07 electric sedan was launched there – after it was unofficially revealed in Chinese government certification documents last month.

While the first-generation Seal 07 plug-in hybrid (DM-i) was released in China in 2025, the electric version – badged as the Seal 07 EV – was only launched there in March 2026.

The new Seal 07 will once again be available in both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric (EV) forms, and could be offered in Australia alongside the smaller Seal electric sedan available here since late 2023, and the Seal 6 PHEV sedan and wagon released locally in May this year.

Australian government certification filings published in May 2026 suggest the plug-in hybrid Seal 7, as it could be known here, will become BYD's second PHEV sedan in local showrooms, following the Seal 6.

BYD typically drops the zero from some Chinese-market model names for export markets, though the new Seal 07 has not been confirmed for Australia at this stage.

Per CarNewsChina, the new Seal 07 grows substantially in size, with official dimensions confirming those previously revealed in a Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing.

According to BYD, the new Seal 07 measures a sizeable 5080mm long, 1960mm wide and 1495mm tall on a 60mm-longer (now 2960mm) wheelbase.

That makes it 240mm longer than the plug-in hybrid Seal 6 Touring and sedan sold in Australia, and 280mm longer than the Seal electric sedan.

The second-generation Seal 07 is also 85mm longer and 50mm wider than the current Seal 07 EV it will replace, which measures 4995mm long and 1910mm wide, liberating a more spacious cabin (although the roof height remains unchanged at 1495mm).

It also adopts BYD’s ‘Ocean Aesthetics 2.0’ design philosophy, aligning its visual identity with the larger-still Seal 08 sold in China, and featuring a closed-grille design flanked by wave-shaped split headlights up front, and a full-width tail-light assembly at the rear, which is also consistent with the Seal 08.

The vehicle is equipped with a roof-mounted LiDAR, indicating the inclusion of BYD’s ‘God’s Eye B’ advanced driver-assistance system, as well as a panoramic sunroof, semi-hidden door handles, and the choice of various 18-inch or 19-inchwheel designs.

The new Seal 07 PHEV is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 115kW of power, matched with an electric motor producing 160kW and a 38.029kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery delivering an EV driving range of 245km under the WLTC cycle.

The new Seal 07 EV, meanwhile, will come with a rear-mounted 300kW electric motor, a WLTP range of no less than 718km, and a 240km/h top speed.

So far there’s no official sign of the entry-level version of the Seal 07 EV, which according to MIIT documents produces 245kW – 5kW more than the current model.

The current Seal 07 DM-i was launched in China in September 2025, several months before the current Seal 07 EV arrived in showrooms there.

Their rapid replacement may be in response to weak demand, with the existing Seal 07 EV and PHEV recording just over 1000 sales in China in August

Locally, the Seal remains BYD Australia’s best-selling sedan, outselling both the newer Seal 6 sedan and wagon, but not the Shark 6 PHEV ute nor any of the Chinese brand’s SUVs, led by the top-selling Sealion 7 mid-size electric SUV.
