No, it's not legal to solve a Rubik's Cube while driving on a highway

The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has shared a shocking video online depicting a motorist testing their puzzle-solving skills with a Rubik’s Cube… while driving at 126km/h.

The video, which was recorded back in 2019 but recently shared by the DGT, shows a driver busily rotating the cube in their hands and conversing with the passenger next to them while driving at highway speeds.

Caught on camera, the irresponsible driver was later served an infringement notice.

Many modern cars are equipped with advanced driver assistance technology such as lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control, but the vehicle at the centre of this incident was a Peugeot 307 SW which has none of these advanced driver assistance features.

Spanish traffic authorities shared the video to draw awareness towards the dangers of distracted driving.

“For some, driving requires so little attention that they believe they can handle their cell phone, eat, put on makeup… or play Rubik’s Cube! Distractions are behind 32% of fatal #RoadAccidents. This video is a few years old, but it continues to leave us frozen,” read a DGT post on X, translated from Spanish.

It’s not the first time someone has been caught trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube behind the wheel, with Surrey Police in the UK catching someone doing the same thing last year.
