Toyota C-HR recalled for fire risk

Toyota Australia has recalled 14,480 petrol-powered versions of the 2019-2023 C-HR to fix a problem with the high pressure fuel pump.

“The involved vehicles are equipped with a high pressure fuel pump,” Toyota Australia says in its recall notice.

“The fuel pump has a plunger that moves down in a cylinder to create a vacuum, which brings in fuel through a fuel inlet control valve and up in the cylinder to create pressure which sends fuel to the engine through the check valve.

“Due to insufficient press fitting of certain parts in the high pressure fuel pump, operation over time may cause (1) the cylinder to move and create wear between the cylinder and pump body resulting in increased stress to both aforementioned valves; or (2) the valve seat to move within the pump body resulting in valve seat wear and increased stress to the inlet control valve.”

“The increased stress on the above valves can cause a crack to develop at the weld for the affected valve(s), which could lead to a fuel leak and potential fuel odour. In the presence of an ignition source, a fuel leak can result in an increased risk of a fire.”

Toyota will contact owners of the affected vehicles and advise them to organise a free inspection and fix with their nearest dealer.
