Continental launches new all-terrain tyre for Australia

The Continental CrossContact A/T2 has been launched in Australia, where the new all-terrain tyre is now available in a range of sizes, each offering more off-road capability than previous products.

All but two sizes of the CrossContact A/T2, which is designed to offer a 50:50 balance between on- and off-road driving, are being released with heavy-duty ‘LT’ construction, which is said to make the tyre more rigid and robust thanks to stronger belt and ply material, tougher bead cores, and reinforced sidewalls to provide greater durability.

However, according to Continental, the CrossContact A/T2 has also been created to deliver superior road holding and comfort, with wet and dry performance being more akin to that of a typical highway tyre.

The German tyre giant says the new all-terrains utilise its new ‘BlackPaw Compound’ – an advanced polymer that remains flexible in a wide range of temperatures and in wet conditions, allowing the rubber maintain grip on tarmac, gravel, and rock.

It’s understood the tyres were developed for the demanding Australian market, with much of the testing and development completed at the company’s 2000-hectare proving ground in Texas.

Compared to Continental’s AX6 ‘mild-terrain’ tyre, the new A/T2 offers 13 per cent greater off-road traction, 10 per cent more mileage, six per cent greater tread depth at the centre, 14.9 per cent at the outer edge, and 33.3 per cent more off-shoulder thickness.

Available in more than 30 sizes across 15, 16, 17, 18, and 20 inches, the CrossContact A/T2 offers increased tread depth, greater spacing between tread blocks for grip and debris evacuation, and self-cleaning open shoulders to expel mud and water, and to improve handling in low-traction environments.

The Continental CrossContact A/T2 is initially available in sizes starting from 245/75R16, spanning up to 275/65R20, with prices kicking off from around $349 at major retailers, depending on the size.
