We’ve seen it before in movies. A driver in a high-end car evades their captors by barrelling down busy streets, crashing into street furniture in a desperate attempt to escape.
But in the videos below, there are no film cameras capturing the destruction, just bewildered passers-by with their mobile phones. Warning: there is some strong language in these videos.
A 2019-20 Cadillac CT6 sedan was filmed in the Kips Bay neighbourhood of Manhattan reversing rapidly and knocking over a police officer just moments after another tried to break the window of the car to stop the driver.
After knocking over the officer, the driver then accelerates and crashes through the outdoor dining area of a restaurant, before clumsily knocking over a pole and a fire hydrant, and almost hitting a pedestrian.
The CT6 was later found abandoned, with heavy front-end damage.
Local news station PIX11reports the NYPD officer suffered a head injury but was hospitalised in a stable condition.
The car had previously fled a traffic stop across town on West 38th Street and Seventh Avenue, before being pulled over again on East 30th Street between Madison and Park Avenue.
Police officials have yet to announce the suspect’s arrest.
